SELF INTRODUCTION: I was on the last board as bonustoolkit. I have changed that to my given name.
I started a project build there " File and Fit." I paln to continue that when I go back home in Dec. 2011. I first joined the board when Gary W had it in the year 2005. That was the time I really gained an interest in building chops. I have a long way to go, compared to some here.

SELF INTRODUCTION: Seemingly still just a wannabe, as I've not actually built a chopper yet. But I know what I'm doing. I'm startin slow, studying, tooling up, and thinking about it properly - someone here once said "The important thing about finishing your first build is to not let your ambitions exceed your abilities." I'm holdin my ambitions just a little ahead of my abilites so's I can stay motivated. Gary said the balance of time and money is key - So, I'm working that, too. Just reallly grateful to find that this incredible resource is still alive and accessible.
I'm hoping to actually connect with and make some friends here this time.
I'm in So NH repairing and riding the low buck jap junk for now... practicing, discovering my fav riding style, learning CAD, machining, designing and building tools. Lonely. I've got friends and family, and riding buds but no close chopper freaks to hold a torch. Aaaaand, I've said too much again....

It’s refreshing to see this thread.

My local chopper “king” said it’s not worth it to build your own frame anymore cause they’re so cheap now - $500 on sale… I’ve been working at this frame building art/science for years, tooling up, feeling the burn the whole time. Now this guy whose dedicated his livelihood to chopper build/sales/service, and who many people go to, says “yeah just bolt it on.” (???)

When I heard this I thought maybe I’m just being my old OCD self and hanging on to dead dreams, trying to do something the most complicated, difficult way only to have it come out looking as though it’s the same as all the other off the shelf stuff….
(I once made a mix tape which included layers upon layers of sound effects very complicated; many audio inputs, volume balancing, timing details… in the end it sounded like I’d just pushed the record button on one deck and that all of the effects actually happened at that time. Complicated way to get a simple result.)

So, I was thinking I’m just being an idiot – then I log on here and am reminded that, although not as vibrant as it once was, the handmade hardcore chopper building scene is still a reality. So maybe my investments haven’t been in vain.

Frustrated at the loss of info since last crash (or whatever) but I too have my own binder/files – not nearly as comprehensive as yours seems..

Passing it on – perhaps the art is kept alive through direct relationship mentoring – find a young one whose interested in getting dirty or has that “how’s that work” mentality… invite them, encourage them, empower them. I’m interested in doing this on a small scale, and have assisted a young man with his high school project as he restored a small sport bike in my shop, but I’d like to find an interested someone who really wants to start from scratch – once I get cookin myself. (wrote this all before I checked out the link in the post before me including Baas Metals’ project. Hats off to Fabricator Kevin.)

I believe in open source – fact I teach TIG welding at a local public access workshop – but just laying all the detailed info out there on the interwebs with no connection to desire might sort of dilute it – I dunno, maybe.

I too would like to see that welding sequence topic, again.

Your car should be old style
Your clothes rather new
Your chopper - a tasteful mix of the two.

From when I was young , I remember this man. I used to read about him in 60's car mags.

Here is one of the ICONS and hotrod legends, still passing on his experience and goodwill.

Many who have been to his workshops feel honored to have been able to learn from him.

He is 84?, and still sharing his knowledge and skills.

This fits right in with what this thread is about, imo.
