I have been in the shop building my jig. It is a crime scene choppers knock off that I have done some slight changes to the prints.
http://www.crimescenechoppers.com/blog/jigplans/

It has been a 3 week process.

I started by cutting the two main slide rails.

I put one rail on top the other to insure same length.

Image

Did the same with the top rails.

Image

I cut all the other pieces and sand blasted the ones that fit in the cabnet.
This took a long time!!!!

Image

Then took the burrs off all parts.

Image

All the parts blasted.

Image

I then sanded them and the ones that would not fit in cabnet.

Image

All the parts cleaned and ready for machining.

This took a long time!!!!

Image

After 3 days machining!!!

I have all the parts machined. I love my Bridgeport Mill!!!

Welding the top rails on.

Welded the frame together. Took longer than you would think to make sure straigt!!!!!

Showing rails true along top sliding edge.

Welded plates to bottom of post. This is on of the mods I did by taping holes.

Image

Fixed post in center of jig.
Matted to each other.

Image

Made sure angles matched jig because table not leveled.

Welded the rear jig mount and made sure same as table. Measurement has changed because table was moved while welding.

Moved post and welded the other neck ficture to match.
Clamped together.

Clamps removed after welding

Image

Installed all thread in neck.

Welding motor and rail fixture.

Fixture welded. This is one of the other mods made by making adjustable rails,

I was just going through the build thread. Looking real nice. Excellent lines on your frame. Didn't we have a talk about flame thrower tips? Good luck on the girder, too.

This is perfection. And an awesome write up and pictorial as well.

Also, I have a question - Is the purpose of the top rails (the 1/2" by 2" flat stock which lays on top of the main rails of the jig) to keep the rails straight and in line with the center line?

Can we do without it?

I'm using a heavier wall than normal for the main rails (because it's what I've got) but I've noticed that even they aren't exactly straight and true. Flat stock on the top makes it even heavier and brings up the cost so I'd like to do without them, but not at the expense of precision.

What are peoples thoughts on this?

I'm going to start a new thread about this specifically.

A jig can be a straight chalk line on the floor or made from wood.

So, build your jig however you want just make it striaght when done.

A tube is not always round or square as it is extruded when made and rolled by a machine. That is the one reason fo the top 1/2 plates to give a more parrellel suface.
