They die cast the steering shaft in aluminum or cast iron it is not pressed in.

Make sure you have it all off it going to weld it to lower tree?

Yes was planning to weld it to lower tree, good idea or bad. I will grind it down to steel area on shaft for welding if possible.

You get all the casting off you will be ok!
