Thanks !!!

Lots of planning time and thought went into those!!

It is scary when you have so much time in one piece and the next machining step or hole for some reason mostly human error is off and you have to throw away!! It makes you double tripple check before each process!!!

You just pray and measure after each step and hope hours or days of work is not lost not to mention the material!!!

I got lucky and did not screw these things up!!!

railroad bob wrote:Very nice to see your progress.

Couple things, drilling the corners to prevent stress cracks was new to me, but I think it's a damn good idea.
I'm not a machinist, haven't even played one on TV, but it sure seems reasonable to me.

I'm wondering what kind of bender you're using that you can get those long radius bends, like the backbone.
They look really good.

A great thread all around...

Sharp corners are a machinist worse enemy and should be avoided at all cost especially in high vibration enviroments!!!
It is easly fixed by rounding corners or drilling!! If you do ever have to repair a crack by welding in anything drill a hole in both ends of the crack before welding this will keep the crack/ break from coming back or extending farther across part!!!

I am using a cheap harbor fright tube roller!!

http://www.harborfreight.com/tubing-roller-99736.html

It comes with 1in, 1.5in, and 2in dies. I only need the 1in and 1.5 dies for the build because that is the tube I decided to use.

I had to drill the roller and shaft and install a thru bolt because only set screwed to shaft and spun!!

It sucked to do it and it was not the cranking the roller presure allthough that was a task!!

You can only take 1/4 to 1/2 a turn at a time on the roller presure bolt!!

Make sure to mark the tube!!

But if you want it bad enough you will do it and risk having to do over tell you get one that works!!

Even with running one direction with bends the stupid roller wants to twist the tube!!!! Not make it straight.

You have to unload once it started twisting reposition the rollers with mark on each roll.

Then turn the tube around and feed tube back the other way to take twist out.

Hours of doing this to get here straight.

Then lay on floor use straight edge and see if it was straight. If not put back in and use the way you new it wanted to twist against it and roll the other way tell she came back.

I am talking 1/16 here but pissed me off having to do that process!!!

If not checking it with mark could have been 1/2 out or more on all axis.It would be a spiraled curve!!

I had 6 to 8 hours in the backbone tube alone sweating the whole time!!!

The tubing notcher came from ther too!!!

http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsea ... ng+notcher

I had to shim the swivel plate to center notch in tube because aparently the chinese can not measure!!

But for 50$ and I could buy it same day here with no shipping charges it was worth it!!!

I just used 3 washers under bolts to do and a couple short wasted pieces of tube to do!!

I cut tubes 3 inchs long and progresively cut back adjusting the angle and test fitting tell I had it right for money cut!!!

Once I had the angle right for one tube I could repeat for the coresponding tube if there was match bars!!!

Thanks Guys!!

I was always told to surround yourself with people brighter than you and this is definally the place for that for me!!

I like it here!!!

I got my girls steering shaft down!!!

I started by turning shaft down!!!

Image

When turning shaft to thread I turn .005 to .008 under size!
1in I turned to.995!!

Image

I ground down HSS blank for the threading tool!!
I just used a bolt to get my 60 degree angle!!
They make tools for this or a protractor but, this works for me!!!

Image

I beveled edge of shaft!!!

Image

I then set about changing the gear sets to proper threading gear set!!!
This really makes you respect the old timmers that had to do this for every operation!!
I still would love a newer lathe that you just throw a couple levers and have new feed rate!!!

Turning Set

Image

Chart to go by!!!

Image

Threading gear set!!!!

Image

Put tool up to part and found the start position for cutting!!!

Image

Image

Noted that position!!!
This cross slide does stays in this position!!
At the end of each thread pass I turn motor off because no break!!
Back ths cross slide up and disconnect the drive gear on carriage all in one move real fast!!

Then move back the cross slide to the same position!!!

Set the compound slide to 59,5 degrees!!!
Every book says to nake this angle 60 but a old machinist taught me to use 59.5degrees and it has always worked for me!!!

Image

Image

Moved the carraige position indicator to feed drive shaft!!!
The numbers are used to know the position of carrige to get start threading posiiton!!
All even threads use a even number to engage the feed for carraige!!
All odd threads use an odd number!!
All half thread use a half postion!!

Image

Image

This dail on the compound slide I turn in each pass .005 to cut only one side of threads!!!

Image

I use this forumula to get a known minor diameter or how deep to cut threads!!!

(Diameter of bolt / number of threads) x .01 = Difference between major and minor diameter
Major diameter - Difference between major and minor diameter= Minor diameter or thread cutting depth measured across threads

(1in bolt/14tpi) x .01= 0.0714285
1 - .0714285 = .9285715 minor diameter/ depth to cut threads!!!

Image

I like to only cut untill .020 from this minor diameter and use die to produce the rest of the thread!!
Basically I am just using lathe to cut most of the thread and allow the die to start straight!!!
This lathe being flexable on larger threads it gets harder to set speed to not get chatter on threads towards the end and more massive cuts! So, this way works the best with this lathe!!!

Before I do that I will Cut the recess to clean up the end of threads!!
It is better to have this rounded so not to have a sharp edge for a crack or break to happen easily!!!

I used a HSS blank I made for this!!!

Image

Image

Now used die to chase first the correct way then run on backwards to get threads to end of shank!!!
Then checked with both nuts locking and not locking!!

Image

Image

Image

Now to start assembly!!

It goes from bottom up.
Locknut
washer
bottom tree
washer
bearing cup
shaft
neck
bearing cup
dust sheild
top tree
washer
locknut

Here is bottom assembled!!

Image

Image

Assembling top!!

The bearing cups are tolerance fit so has to be tapped on to shaft with hammer down to position!!!

Image

Dust Shield

Image

I took a flap disc on grinder and removed material with fly cut so tree would clear back bone completly and have farther turning radius!!

Image

Showing installed now I can start to build the girder legs!!!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Showing clearance for way more than posible turning radius!!!

Image

Image

What it looks like from sitting on her!!!

Image

With shock!!

Re: La Puttana ------Build------ Ride her hard, Sell her Che

It would not seemlike it would but it took me a day to produce these!!

I got the linkages done for the girl!!

I started by test drilling and milling holes tell I found a process that would give me a pressed fit!!!

Image

Knowing I had a way to procede I welded the 4 plates togther!!

Image

Image

I then fly cut the plates to 6.25in long and made the part in CAD so I knew the dimensions to drill!!
My battery died on Camera so no pics of these processes!!!
But, I got it charged and found position of hole in part with percision ground pin and DRO!!!

Image

I then center drilled the hole so the drill bit started straight!!!

Image

I took the oportunity to scribe the lines to use latter when rounding the parts!!!

Image

Image

Then drilled the holes!!
I was able to add some more welds toplates because they would not be in the way of the parrellels in vise while drilling and the other tacks would be ground while milling the rounded part!!
I then put on rotary table and positioned using small engraving bit!!!

Image

The plates rounded!!! I just rough end milled them!!

Image

I then using a flap sanding disc smothed the plates out!!!

Image

Then ground the tacks off!!

Image

I then stamped the parts to know match sets and the dots close to each other tells me the were facing each other when drilled!!
They all should be match sets to the thousandth but better to have them marked incase they are millionths off!!!!

Image

I then took flap disc and smoothed the edges of plates!!!

Image

I took a countersink by hand and took the burrs off holes!!

Image

Then pressed the PTFE Oilite bushings in the plates!!!

Image

The linkages done!!!

Image

Then put the rest of the componets together!!

From outside in!!

1/2 13tpi Grade 8 bolt
Stainless 1/2in washer
Nylon Washer
PTFE Oilite Thrust bushing
Linkage with Oillite PTFE bushing
PTFE Oilite Thrust bushing
Nylon Washer
Stainless 1/2in washer
Tree
Stainless 1/2in washer
Nylon Washer
PTFE Oilite Thrust bushing
Linkage with Oillite PTFE bushing
PTFE Oilite Thrust bushing
Nylon Washer
Stainless 1/2in washer
Then the girder legs
Then stainless 1/2 washer
Then there will be stainless 1/2 13 tpi nylon locknuts

Image

Image

Image

Image

I can finally get to building the girder legs!!!

Anybody got a vote on which Girder legs to build???
It is funny when you try to design things how concepts become impractical to build with in space limitations and the old timmers that treaded the path before had the concept perfected!!!

Option 1 Conventional????

Or the Dog Killer Girder???

I thought curves tell I built in the actual dieminsions???

I was not sure they looked good when I seen them in the constraints of the trail/front spindle and linkages???
