Since all I can see is the left hand half of the pics I really cant give an opinion , but I have to ask if you looked at the chopper handbook part of this site to see how a girder should be built before you started on this one ??

I researched it several times????

The bolts were to be at a least 118,000 breaking tensile strength witch the grade 8 are???
The cost me 50$ for the 4!!
I priced hardend shafts 1/2 which would have be .375 threaded bosses and not as strong??
They cost 200$ for them and would have to be built at set length 6in or 8 in!!
The 5/8in with 1/2in bosses that are recomended were more money almost 270$??
I measured a hardened pin shoulder bolts same configuration 1/2 with the .375 treaded bosses at work and measured .495!!
The Grade 8 bolt measured at .495???

I could not get oilite bushings with thrust washers included on one side for the 1/2 so chose to use a oillite ptfe bronze 1/2 bushing and two oilite thrust washers??
They should act in the same manner????
They are 1/8 in thick all three oilite bushings per linkage connection???

I am not sure about the nylon washers I ordered and may part larger ones 1.5in x .020 off on lathe to make larger and spread load across the bushings???

The shock was suppose to be 11.5in in length found on a 250 or simalar model with 200 to 300 lbs force to move 1in in travel??
I will have to admit I only tested this by appling my full body wieght to judge also tested the shock from other and girder and it seemed to have simalar force???
The travel was supose to be idealy 3.5in and these are short 3/4in only because of rubber stops on shock shaft???
This I belive may be may main problem but planned to fix latter by raising the bike the 1in stated in hand book and tacking a mount then testing tell I had a negative 20 degree angle on linkages with out rider???
I may have to try several shocks tell I find one that works????
I had planned to run two shocks but after rereading the chopper handbook relized that I did not have matched pairsand only one would do the work decided to run one???

As for the Girder legs I took it as saying I could build almost unlimited shapes in .120 1in tube as long as there was supported sections to cross the bars???
I will have 38.5 in length and planed to use .250 steel plate as gussets in corners and across the lower linkage mount to front leg?????
The half inch is the extra length it said to account for sweling of rear tire at speed?????
I was going to put a cross bar in too[Maybe] Not sure????

Here is Quote from handbook about the construction of legs???

Quote
Girders appeal to many builders since than can take on so many different shapes and styles, just a few of which are illustrated below in figure 7.15.

Figure 7.15

As mentioned above Girder forks are inexpensive to build. It is entirely possible to buy all of the materials and components for a first class set of forks for under $250 in most parts of the country. Depending upon the techniques and methods of construction very few special tools or equipment are needed and improvisation can lead to many creative solutions to bypass the need for expensive machine work if you’re on a really tight budget. There is also tremendous opportunity for those out there who have access to aluminum casting equipment and some imagination. The sky is the limit as to what a person can come up with.

These are my first set and am willing to throw away and start over if for any reason I have miscalculated or forgoten or overlooked any engineering aspect the handbook says to do??
Or any builder with knowledge tells me I need to do to correct any of my faults???
I had not been putting the gussets or cross bars in the concept drawings just trying to get visilization of which girder leg to procede with??
I was also hoping that if I had faulted that someone would help a young punk kid like me to build himself a fully correctly functioning front girder system???

Thanks!!

I have not the money for a Harley and this bike ran good so under the knife she went again!!

After setting the tank on there I think about anything that will hold fuel will look good!!

I will not start girder legs tell tommorrow!!

Then still have to machine the jig to build legs as match pairs!!!

I have gotten the thumbs up from Gary Weishaupt the writter and author of the Chopper builders Handbook on the engineering of girder so I will be able to move foward without hesitation!!

He is a GREAT GUY!!!!

For any visitor to find easy!!

From outside of front tire to outside of rear tire!!!! Rough estimate by placing the front tire about at place!!

Will be pushing almost exactly 10ft with the new trail number that I have been helped by this great site to find!!!

May be a little under but not by much!!!

Should turn some heads when she does roll!!!

This is the design I am going to build!!

At least first set???

Gary made some recomendations and also told me that trail was a matter of personal preferance!! Kyrmis the Great man that allowed me to use his trig equations also referanced to this!!

Gary said any number between 2.75in and 4in would be fine and he knew of other builders that used 5in trail numbers with great success!!

I changed the trail slightly to acomendate a turning radius!!!

He also recomended the straight legs so vector of force would be best transfered and since I plan this bike to be a rider I am going to use the design with best posiblities for long term success!!

Here is the design!!

Image

This should represent turning radius!!!

Well just went and got the tube for the girder legs!!

I got 32ft of 1in .120 wall for 102$ with the Tax!!!

This will finish the legs if I do not screw up and the handlebars!!

I will have under 250$ in all the tubing with the fuel to get added in!!!

I got it same day as I wanted it and only shipping was the 6 dollars in fuel to get it!!

Re: La Puttana ------Build------ Ride her hard, Sell her Che

I have been working!!!

I started by turning toproper length and drilliing the mounting locations on the Lathe!!

Image

Image

Image

Their sizes were dictated by the size of the washers to hold them!!!

Image

Image

The width of the linkages also was made tomatch this size!!!

Image

Image

A print was made of the fixture!!!

Image

I then set up a pice of steel on the mill!!

Image

Image

Image

Image

I then drilled and tapped the holes off the print!!!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

I scribed the cut location!!!

Image

With the machining done I stamped the top of fixture plates!!!

Image

Image

I then test fit plate to trees to see if the links would be parrellel!!

Image

Image

Image

Fixture done!!!

Image

I then cleaned my workbench a long overdue thing!!!

Image

Image

I then made the bolts that hold the mounts to fixture!!!

Image

Image

Image

Notice the bolts have a sholder to imulate the shafts they will ride on!!!

Image

Image

I checked the mounts square with the plate!!

Image

Image

Image

I then scribed the outter locations of the mount locations and used the print to find what overall distance is!!

Image

Image

I pulled out possible the most protected stright edge in the state!!

Image

Image

I then layed out the girder leg fixture on the table and tacked plates!!!

Failed attempt one where I did not add 1in to length measurement!!!

Tacked one plate down!!

Image

Image

Used second straight edge to make sure inline with each other!!!

Image

Image

Measured off 1in for more accurate positioning!!

Image

Image

My table apparently has a bow in it so shimmed the plate tosquare them upin other axis!!

Image

Checked straight with each other for both legs!!!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

When double checking everything found the length wrong!!! They were straight and level with each other but off on length!!
So, cut welds off table and did failed attempt two!!
This time I did not get them square with each other!!! Only 1/16th off!!
But, when you have been building everying to the thousandth 125 of them is a lot!!!

Second attempt!!!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

After two failed attepts I called in reinforcements for an extra set of hands!!
The man who taught me most of what I know a Millwright by trade and dozens of other tittles that include my father!!

Image

Third attempt worked and is within 2 thousands of perfectly square!!!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Rechecked my length while waiting for him and this gives me the 1/2inch the handbook says to do!!!

Image

Set up the rotary vise on the mill!!!

Image

Used the print to get rough cuts with mill done to print lengths!!
All bars were fitted by hand using several grinders!!!

Image

Made line on tubes put tube in vise and with 1in endmill made cuts with mill and followed print for bothbars!!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Used the tube notcher to make the tubes for center mount!!!!

Image

Just layed tubes on top each other and marked with paint marker and notched the ground to fit and match other leg!!!

Image

Image

Image

Showing bars match!!!

Image

Image

Then remade the center tubes for second girderleg set!!!

Image

Tacked the legs!!!

Image

Image

Fipped over and bolted upside down in fixture to make staight and tack other side!!!

Image

Image

Welded!!!

Image

Image

Image

Both legs sections done!!

Image

Then put on bike to see what I had????

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The bike measures at almost perect 9ft 10in!!!

Image

Image

I put the shock on the lower mount location bolt to see howmuch the shock was effected by the wieght!!
It is actually supporting the bike in next two pics!!

Image

Image

I have plenty left before this is completed but all the major parts are done now!!

SELF INTRODUCTION: So,...I guess I'm a newb. Can I get my "General Smart-Ass" moniker back, or do I actually have to build something. Like a chopper for example. I am hoping to re-start a build that's been sitting in my shop for a couple years with most of the parts already acquired.
Just wanted to thank Dan and anyone else involved in getting this board up and running.
Dan is a personal friend of mine and one of the finest people I know. I have a world of respect for him, not just for his work here but also for reasons beyond this forum.
Not sure if that's 200 words, but that's my intro and I'm sticking to it.
BTW, I'm Mark. Not Indian, just a fanatic of the motorcycle brand.

Wow, This is one hell of a great project. I think this is what Gary had in mind years ago when he started this (previous) site.
Nice detail in the posting too!

Thanks!!

I just went out and put a 12.5in shock instead of the 11.5in shock on lower link bolt and it sits perfect and even with rider!!!

I am so happy!!!
