La Puttana ------Build------ Ride her hard, Sell her Cheap

Post by Customize IT »

I started work on Ana today.

Rolled her in.

Image

Image

Started taking her apart.

Image

This is how the softail was.
Not going to be that way no more.

Image

Image

Here is how I had raked the neck.

Image

Image

Taken apart and just set on jig.

Image

I want to reuse the stock rear wheel so modifacations had to be made for the rear axle jig bolt.

The two axle plates have different size holes. So one size had to be turned down and then drilled and taped with a 3/8 bolt to hold the plate.

I then found that I had not welded it square before with not having a jig last time. so, dicided to make bolt to where I could put drive sprocket on. That meant I had to turn down other side to inner bearing size and turn end down to thread to metric nut.

I did not get pics of both side done here is the start of doing it.

Image

Image

With that done and its distances set. I was able to cut swing arm off and start to alighn the motor in the jig.

Straight edge across the two sprockets.

Image

Image

Image

Now made sure sprockets where alighned with jig.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Front motor mount square in jig and distances the same.

Image

Image

Now checked the top motor mount square and distances the same.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Made sure the dimensions where the same on frame rails.

Image

Image

Welded the motor in place with temp struts to remove the rest of frame.

Image

Cut the neck off the frame.

Image

Image

Where I am at now. I have not got bottom rails yet had to come in to watch the kid.

Image

Pile of parts!!!!!!!

Got the neck ground down and sanded.

Image

Installed on Jig

Image

Moved the allthread down to make sure it was in center of rails.

Image

Image

Set angle to 45 degrees with table.

Image

Image

Brought is girder and took measurements. Found out that the girder will not work on this build with my design even at 60 degrees. So, looks like I will be building a girder for her too. I will be able to use the 21 in Harley rim thou.

Image

Image

Set the rear axle hieght to allow 7.5 in clearance to bottom of frame. With the exhaust tucked under the frame it will be around 6in.

Image

Have I been mentioning remeasuring everything over and over and over.

I then put wheels by frame to get a feel of how she looks.

Image

Image

Did a quick render with paint to show about what I want her to look like.

I was able to get in the garage today.

First I sanded the tube down.

Image

Then rough measured for downtube and added a foot to measurement.

Image

Image

Now with measurement marked tube length.

Image

Now a used a old pipe layers trick and found a piece of paper. Learned this while welding structural pipe.

Image

Wraped the tube with the paper.

Image

Now pulled paper tight and alighned edges. This is an easy way to make a straight cut on tube or pipe.

Image

Now used paint marker to get line.

Image

Then rewrap and use a pen!!!

Image

Layed pipe by straight edge and clamped on floor because that is my only space.

Image

Now used a square to mark tube.

Image

This is important to be able to keep tube straight while bending. Tube marked.

Image

If you use a roller mark the upper die in set because it can roll tube and it will end up now straight

Image

My camera battery died so missed out on showing how I bent the tube. Doh!!!!!!

That did not slow me down thou!!!!!

I was able to get backbone and front downtube made and notched.
These pics are all after the fact but I will share them.

Here is pic

Image

This is how I temp mounted the backbone whitch I did first.
Welded plate and spot welded in center.
This allowed me to push tube until straight.
Then welded a little more solid.
The tube will be cut at least 1 in higher latter when other tubes are in.
The clamps hold it in place and allow me to center it..

Image

Showing square with frame both directions.

Image

Image

Did the same with front tube this tube needed two plates to hold it proper. The back bone rested on the old motor mount so able to get away with one.
I forgot to get pics showing them center with rails by measuring. I can get pics if someone does not belive it.

Image

Image

Showing the notches between tube with neck. I have not cleaned with grinder yet they will get a little better when cleaned and worked.

Image

Image

Image

A couple profile shots.

Image

Image

Some how some ugly Fu@#ER got in this one!!!

Image

Image

I know I am going to have to make the front and rear mounts for engine totally removable to get the engine out. I put the rear bend in to allow for easy carb removal and clearance for pod filters.
The drop seat with springs will hang on the bend so frame will flow back with it installed.

Image

A pic showing the back bone straight. Not a easy task with roller.

I was able to do a little thinking today. Scary RIGHT!!! It HURT my head a little.

Did some layout and planning for the bottom rails.

Layed tube in and squared.

Image

I think ride hieght needed lowered so Moved the ride hieght. This sould help the floow of bottom rail with bend???
Ride hieght now 6.5 in and about 4 something with exhaust???
May change but looks good now.
If wanting an extreme look may as well make it on the edge!!!

Image

Did some measuring with wheel on how long my drop seat could be.
It came under 12in for a fat ass American this may not be good!!
So, decided to move engine and everything foward about 4.5 in.

Hell it may be better to have neck closer to jig anyway when welding.

Image

Pic with wheel up at new ride hieght to see the flow in my head????

Image

Image

Measured for seat again!!

Got 16.5 inchs
minus 1 in for fender
minus 1 in for seat clearance when compressed

Seat pan can be 14. 5 inchs now.

Image

That will make my seat hieght about 20 inchs off ground to bottom of pan!!!

Image

Over length of frame will be about 5 and a half foot if I leave It where it is.
I have to work this out before frame rails can be bent.
This is about all I will get done today!!! Damn It stuff to do!!!

I was able to do some more work on La Puta today!!!

Started with rough layout of new axle plates.

Image

Holding it up to bike seeing it in my head. Thought about changing the design a bit. A little kid could bend it to match this design!!!

Image

Making sure the nut would clear and all the tolerances would work.

Image

Set one plate up in mill. Found plate edge and the center of plate with pricision ground pin.

Image

Image

Zeroed the DRO

Image

Milled the plate for drive sproket side
Here it is done. Must of forgot about pics when doing it.

Image

Making sure hole 2.250 in of travel.

Image

Showing the milled dimension!!!

Image

The stock milled dimension. This plate is better tolerance than the factory plate.

Image

Milled other plate. These are different sized holes so could not do together. Had to be done seperate. Of course found plate edge and center with pin and DRO.
I must have forgotten to get the pics showing it is in better tolerance than stock plate.

Image

Clamped the two plates togther.
Of course after checking dimensions the same.

Image

Showing different sized milled holes. Wish I had gotten a straighter shot so you could see better how well cut.

Image

Welded plates together.

Image

Fly cut edge.

Image

Checked with square.

Image

Fly cut other side.

Image

Turned plates over and found center. Of course after filling burrs off inbetween machining steps.

Image

Got measurement plus ground pin on DRO.

Image

Took this mesurment and divided in half to find center point.

Image

Double checked all center measurments done with calipers.

Image

Milled plates!!!

Image

Checking the block set even with plates.

Image

Used ground pin and DRO to find plate edge.

Image

Drilled first hole since already set up on plates center.

Image

Checked I was correct on dimension for allthread.

Image

Drilled hole in other plate.

Image

Put stress holes in cut corners so plates do not crack latter. There will be weld over these so no one will ever know it!!!!

Image

Used ground pin to find center both directions.

Image

Showing centered.

Image

Drilled hole.

Image

Tapped hole

Image

Repeated for other block.

Image

Painted surface to know match sets and ground off welds!!!

Image

Used grinder to debur from welds and fly cutting.

Image

The two plates done for now. I will leave them like this untill after the tube is bent. Then cut to match bens and weld the threaded bosses for axle adjusters.
By not welding now I will be able to match back toghther and weld. Then cut the tube patteren on both.

By leaving the plates to cut after bending tube I will not be forced to match the plate and can bend however I want and the trim plates.

Image

Showing plates different angle.

Image

More parts for scrap bin

I was able to work on my girl today!!!

I measured the front motor mount spacing.

Image

Put a piece of round bar in lathe.

Image

Faced the bar.

Image

Took center drill to it.

Image

Measured bolt.

Image

Drilled hole over bolt size.

Image

Measured and marked. The parralell line is indication that the bar came from the number 1 jaw on my three jaw chuck.
This helps with indicating when reinserted into lathe.

Image

Cut off with grinder. I know I could have parted it off but with my lathe not having indication on this axis this way is easier for me.

Image

Faced down to proper length.

Image

Ground to allow the bar sit at proper hieght and easy welding.

Here it is installed

Image

Showing mounts with bar.

Image

Went ahead and made the other mount position. Showed instaled. I will make bracket to mate with backbone latter.

Image

Took the stock axle adjusters.

Image

Cut the ends off.

Image

I had to drill out the spot welds to remove the extra spacer on outside.

Image

Image

Sandblasted, hammered straight, and sanded then installed on rear axle.
The one takes me to the stock position. the second is there for spacing because when welded the frame will pull in. Even if to far out after welding I can make spacers on lathe. This is way better than the alternative of the frame being to tight.

Image

Image

Image

Checked for plates square with frame.

Image

Image

Checked both plates straight and even with each other side to side.

Image

Image

Other side

Image

Image

Checked with straaight edge.

Image

Made sure back bone centered.

Image

Image

Made sure squared with jig.

Image

Checked downtube centered.

Image

Image

Checked the downtube square with jig.

Image

I am now finally ready to bend the side rails. The axle plates and motor mount had to be made before doing this. I had to recenter the bars and make sure square from the repositioning of frame.

I have been doing some layout and checking on the old girl.

Made dummy seat pan to check look.

Image

Took side shot to make sure length right???

Image

Did a couple of renders of two designs. It is funny I am starting to think the easy one will look better. The frame rails being so low with axle does not really seem to complement the curve on the bottom????

Design 1

Image

Design 2

Anybody got a vote on it????

I was able to work on A prostituta today!!!

First I put top rail in postion and marked tube location where I wanted it!!!

Image

Made sure plate in right position.

Image

Image

Then marked with marker.

Image

Then scribed a line on plate. The marker was just to see scribe better.

Image

I put bottom rail in and lined up with top rail marks. Of course rechecking measurements.
Then did same process of marking.

Image

Here it is marked!!!!

Image

Then put in vise and clamped togther. I checked nut too to make sure it would work.

Image

I then welded plates together. I had to use my stick welder because some idiot[ME] knocked bottle over earlier now have to buy new regulator. F#$%^

Image

Image

I then took angle grinder and rough cut plates out. Just making sure to be away from lines.

Image

The parts cut!! Had to go buy a new grinder in the middle of it cause the majic smoke that it runs on came out!!!
Been a hell of a day around here to get something done!!! HA HA HA!!!

Image

I set my rotary table on mill clamped the plates down in center. This just makes it easier to line the cut/ face up with head of machine.

Image

Showing centered does not have to be perfect just so you can turn part with axis!!!

Image

Used a small engraving bit for my CNC Router machine and adjusted the rotary table by moving back and forth tell tool was in line with cut/face.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Locked table!!!

Image

Used a 1/2 in roughing end mill to face the edge. the roughing end mill does better on not straight jagged surfaces when tolerances are either not important or need to removed material fast!!!
Slowly whent in till cut smooth and down to last two passes.

Image

Showing the rough cut and plate now true!!!

Image

Switched to the finsh end mill. The more flutes the smoother the finsh. I am just using a 3 flute.
You can see difference in rough to finsh here!!!

Image

The finsh passes done. I went till line disappered.

Image

Took plate off repositioned and repeated process for other face.

Clamped in center. Found line for face.

Image

Image

Image

Rough cut!!!!

Image

Finsh cut!!!

Image

Cut welds off in vise!!!

Image

A set of custom axle plates done!!!

Image

Measured of center plate hole. I have been checking these measurements along with the bottom plate measurements.

Image

Image

Plates with bars showing the fit!!!
The gap is there from camera angle to show the line straight. Done on purpose to show!!!

Image

With the adjuster installed!!!!

Image

Plates and bars at a distance!!!

I will now be able to really move foward soon on this frame!!!!!

Image

Showing the dummy seat layed on bike. I know it looks to long but when the wheel is moved foward in adjusters and fender and seat installed that gap will fill up real fast!!!!
The seat will be under rear tire hieght for a drop seat look.

I was able to work on giving the bitch some curves last night!!

Just tacked togther but bent and I can now move foward with mounts, gussets, seat, fender bars, downtube bar and all the other stuff before welding!!

I am happy with it especially with just throwing the bike on jig two weeks ago!!!

There was alot of fitting and refitting of bars to get to here.

I had to remake the one lower rail I had. Because it was to short on end. I was able to use bar because so long to make the top rear rail thou!!!

So, no real waste!!!!!!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Ther will be large gussets here. I still have to make them!!!

Image

Image

Another rear shot!!

I clamped this to my jig today.

It will help keep from twisting.

I am also able to make sure neck stays straight!!!

I was able to work on Ana's Tail area last night!!!

I did measurement from rear wheel shaft to wheels tire!!!!

Image

Image

I then made marks on all four bars at 13.5in from farthest point foward on axle plates for loacations for cross bars!!!!

Image

Image

I marked which side of line on bar so I did not screw this up!!!

Image

Image

Checked lines marked square with rails!!!

Image

Got measurements for cross bars!!!!

Image

Image

Had to change the tube notcher over to 1in saw!!!

Image

Just went ahead and notched one end!!!

Image

Painted the center mark of tube with notch!!!

This will be used latter when cutting other end to make sure cuts are parralelll!!!!

Image

Notch made!!!

Image

Marked bar length!!!
When marking of 1in on tape it allows me to make more precise mark. Just make sure to add 1in to measurement!!!!!

Image

Image

Turned bar around and alighned mark up and down to make cuts the same.

Image

Put tube mark in place while doing!!!!

Image

Put the two bars in and did checking before welding. These bars have to be loose in fram but not to loose. If they are tight it will spread the frame and the measureing I have been doing on rear axle plates will be useless!!!!!!

I loosned and then tightned back down this bolt to make sure the frame was not sprung by bars.

Image

Image

Now to do the visual checks that my measurements where right for bars with a fender!!!

Image

Image

Checking chain clearances!!!

Image

Image

Image

Tack welded bars in!!! and checked with square side to side!!!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Checked sqaure with each other by seeing distance gap is the same.

Image

Image

Image

Checked distances the same from the rear jig axle positioner.

Image

Image

Image

Image

I then changed the dies on tube roller!!!
And marked top roller!!!

Image

I marked line on tube!!!

Image

Put tube in roller so lines marked up and started bending!!!

Image

I rolled tube to match fender radius!!!

Image

Tube notcher will not notch a rolled tube right so I had to put the notches in by eye with grinder.
This will be a majic of television kind of thing beacause this took FOREVER!!!!!!

Image

I put bar in centered in frame and tacked!!!

Image

Image

Image

I then did some layout and checking with fender and tire!!!
This is the all the way foward position on axle plates so tire will always be back from here because chain tightner will push it away!!!

looking down showing all foward on plates!!

Image

Seeing the relationship of parts to each other!!
