SELF INTRODUCTION: I have had an interest in choppers from the '70's when I was in high school, reading custom chopper mag etc, I have never had or built a chopper to date, I'm trying to learn, I am acquiring equipment (tube bender, oxy torch etc) and am trying to get started building up the skills and information I need to get started on building a chopper.
My current bike is a Yamaha XV1000, I would class it as a mild custom rather than a chopper, a lot of the useless (to me) bits have been removed and I am trying to modify and chop a few more things off to get it to a longer, lower, leaner machine with better performance (custom shortened rear shocks, refabricate forward controls and drag bars, try and get raked cups working on it etc), but IMHO it doesn't have the right type of frame to build a "proper" chopper on, so I am looking for a more suitable donor bike for the project.

Nice work, it will be a sweet li'l machine when you finish.

I was hunting for an XT500 for my project, but they're regarded as "classic" bikes over here nowadays and the money for basket cases was crazy, so I went with an XT600 instead.

Glad you guys like it, its a good place to share it then, the xt has a cult like following, I got some sweet take off parts with this and doubled what I bought it for, I had a sweet aluminum tank that sold for around $500, that went to the lower states some parts went to europe, it surprised me....so I got a stroked crank for it, got the heads ported by hoose racing, got a 540 piston I am going to try my hand at boreing my jug myself, and do some reinforcing machine work I have read up on on the sr forum, for race engines, heres a shot of getting the wiring worked out and it sitting on its own feet..

SELF INTRODUCTION: I was on the last board as bonustoolkit. I have changed that to my given name.
I started a project build there " File and Fit." I paln to continue that when I go back home in Dec. 2011. I first joined the board when Gary W had it in the year 2005. That was the time I really gained an interest in building chops. I have a long way to go, compared to some here.

Fine workmanship happening here. Rudog was building a leaf spring seat for his too. Comfortable ride, apparently.

The bike on the link is very nice. I need to look that over more carefully.

I noticed with the bastybike that the frame width at the lower downtubes is wider than "stock" dimensions . This would probably make high speed canyon carving next to impossible, as leaning the bike over would have that area make road contact.

Maybe I'm nitpicking. I like the bike!

I think your correct, his builds seem to be for looks more than function but remember this was back when occ was cool, along with fat tires and 80,000 dollar price tags..so yes legitimat nitpick but lots of inspiration in his ideas is my point, in a time when ugly billet occ bikes were in their hayday. But then again the handbook forum was also thriveing and gary posted daily about his updates and ways..and I had no fab skills at all and no tools to try..inspiration to try to learn was instigated much by basty bikes and the handbook forum. So for me its good to come full circle back to this forum and be able to actually contribute. And in the last 7yrs i see no new bikes on bastys site.
