- SELF INTRODUCTION: Hi Dan, thanks for your time and energy spent on this new board. I hope you will give me a waiver on the email account, I have used gmail so long I don't have a clue what my service provider account is.
I just returned home from a 2 week trip in New Mexico, have a few good pix, can't wait to share my off-highway traveling. Got to put 1400 miles on the scoot.

Re: Road trip! 👍👍👍
Update: Pulled the heads on the 360 to replace the gasket, found historic damage on the pistons. The lip above the oil ring was missing in a few places on 2 pistons. No apparent damage to any metal. I suspect it was assembled that way. Since I work out of town, I found a local mechanic who checked the 2nd 390 engine I had bought with the car, looked like a fresh build, so it was swapped in. Some other work done and I was able to drive it home to park for the winter. Next summer I had problems with the brakes, so rebuilt, adjusted front and rear. Front right still locking up and dragging, so took it to the mechanic to have a disc brake kit installed on the front. Stopped in his driveway and the engine was over heating. I left the next day for 8 and a half weeks of work on the North Slope. It was weeping coolant at left rear, found a crack in the block. Currently stored until I have time to work on it.
I have the 360 at a local nachine shop. The crank is good, std size, just needs a light polish. Block and crank bores look good. They will bore to 0.030 over and check the cyl walls, If good I will order piston set to match. I'll be taking the heads and rods in to be examined. Build in progress.
I'll be checking the 390 to make sure the oil/coolant is drained, look at the crack, take some pics to show the machine shop. They might be able to repair.
Since AMC parts are rare here in Alaska, I picked up a 77 Wagoneer with a V8 2 bbl for parts. Vin code specifies a 390 4 bbl, so I'm not sure what I have but parts are worth it. Comes with a TH400 also.

Don't know how I missed this thread for so long but, nice car Bob. I don't think I have seen an AMX since the one a Highschool buddy of mine had. (late 70's early 80's)
I think AMC parts are getting pretty rare everywhere, not just AK.
My very first car was a1964 Rambambler Classic , and parts were starting to get a little hard to find back then. (1977)

My first car owned by myself was a 70 AMX. Bought in 1972 and been a fan ever since. I confess to an addiction as I have over the years gathered up 4 AMXs and a Javelin.drivermark wrote: ↑Mon Nov 10, 2025 4:39 pm Don't know how I missed this thread for so long but, nice car Bob. That sounds like an addiction alright. On the bright side at least you didn't fall for the Pacer
